  81. 1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

  119. 2.1 MANUFACTURER

  128. 2.2 MATERIALS
  129.  
  130.     A.  Coatings:  Ready mixed, except for field catalyzed
  131.         coatings; having good flow and brushing properties and
  132.         consistent drying or curing behavior, free of sags and
  133.         streaks.
  134.  
  135.     B.  Accessory Materials:  Linseed oil, turpentine, paint
  136.         thinners and other materials recommended by coatings
  137.         manufacturer as necessary to achieve finishes specified.
  138.  
  139.     C.  Patching and Surface Preparation:  Latex fillers as
  140.         recommended by coatings manufacturer.

  143. PART 3  EXECUTION
  144.  
  145. 3.1 EXAMINATION
  146.  
  147.     A.  Verify that site environmental conditions are appropriate
  148.         and substrates are in proper condition to receive work of
  149.         this section.
  150.  
  151.     B.  Verify that shop applied primers are compatible with
  152.         specified finish coats.
  153.  
  154.     C.  Measure moisture content of surfaces using an electronic
  155.         moisture meter.  Do not begin application of coatings
  156.         unless moisture content of surfaces is below the
  157.         following maximum values:
  158.         1.  Gypsum wallboard:  12 percent.
  159.         2.  Plaster:  12 percent.
  160.         3.  Masonry surfaces:  12 percent.
  161.         4.  Wood surfaces:  15 percent.
  162.         5.  Vertical concrete surfaces:  12 percent.
  163.         6.  Horizontal concrete surfaces:  8 percent.
  164.  
  165. 3.2 PREPARATION
  166.  
  167.     A.  Remove or mask electrical plates, hardware, light fixture
  168.         trim, and similar fittings prior to beginning painting
  169.         operations.
  170.  
  171.     B.  Correct defects and clean surfaces affecting work of this
  172.         section.  Remove existing coatings that are flaking or
  173.         otherwise in unacceptable condition to receive paint.
  174.  
  175.     C.  Seal with shellac or other coating acceptable to paint
  176.         manufacturer any marks or defects that might bleed
  177.         through paint finishes.
  178.  
  179.     D.  Remove mildew from impervious surfaces by scrubbing with
  180.         solution of trisodium phosphate and bleach.  Rinse with
  181.         clean water and allow substrate to dry.
  182.  
  183.     E.  Concrete and Masonry Surfaces:  Remove dirt, loose
  184.         mortar, scale, salts, alkalies, and other detrimental
  185.         substances.  Remove oils and grease with solution of
  186.         trisodium phosphate; rinse well and allow to dry.
  187.  
  188.     F.  Concrete Floors:  Remove dirt and grease, acid etch, and
  189.         rinse with clear water.
  190.  
  191.     G.  Plaster and Drywall:  Fill hairline cracks, small holes,
  192.         and imperfections with patching compound, then smooth
  193.         patches to match adjacent surfaces.
  194.  
  195.     H.  Interior Wood for Opaque Finish:  Remove dirt and foreign
  196.         matter.  Patch knots, pitch pockets, and other surface
  197.         imperfections with patching compound and seal with sealer
  198.         recommended by paint manufacturer.
  199.  
  200.     I.  Interior Wood for Transparent Finish:  Remove dirt and
  201.         foreign matter.  Seal knots and pitch pockets with sealer
  202.         recommended by stain manufacturer.  Fill nail holes and
  203.         other surface imperfections with tinted calking compound
  204.         after sealer has been applied.
  205.  
  206.     J.  Wood Doors:  Seal top and bottom edges with specified
  207.         primer.
  208.  
  209.     K.  Metal Doors:  Seal top and bottom edges with specified
  210.         primer.
  211.  
  212.     L.  Galvanized Metal Surfaces:  Remove oils and wash with
  213.         solvent.
  214.  
  215.     M.  Aluminum Surfaces:  Remove surface contamination by steam
  216.         or high pressure water.  Remove oxidation by acid etching
  217.         and solvent washing.  Apply specified primer as soon as
  218.         cleaned surfaces are dry.
  219.  
  220. 3.3 APPLICATION
  221.  
  222.     A.  Apply paint products in accordance with manufacturer's
  223.         printed instructions.  Do not apply coatings to surfaces
  224.         that are not dry.
  225.  
  226.     B.  Apply each coat to uniform thickness and finish, with
  227.         each coat slightly darker than preceding coat.  Allow
  228.         each coat to dry thoroughly before applying next coat.
  229.  
  230.     C.  Sand wood and metal surfaces lightly between coats.
  231.         Vacuum surfaces free of loose particles prior to
  232.         application of next coat.
  233.  
  234. 3.4 CLEANING AND PROTECTION
  235.  
  236.     A.  Keep project premises free of painting-related debris.
  237.         Collect material that may constitute a fire hazard, place
  238.         in closed metal containers, and remove daily from site.
  239.  
  240.     B.  Protect work adjacent to painting operations from paint
  241.         spatters and spills.  Immediately remove paint that falls
  242.         on finished surfaces not scheduled to receive paint,
  243.         using materials and techniques that will not damage
  244.         affected surfaces.
  245.  
  246. 3.5 SCHEDULE
  247. NOTE ** For each substrate, where available, a water-based
  248.         coating system and a solvent-based coating system
  249.         are listed.  Select substrates, finishes and
  250.         product type required for Project; delete others.
  251.         If more than one finish (sheen) or coating type is
  252.         required for a particular substrate, be sure to
  253.         indicate where each is to be used, either in the
  254.         specification or on the drawings.
